Summary

Brown Packing Company is recalling approximately 60-lb. boxes of Dutch Valley Veal and various combo bins of fresh beef (veal) trimmings produced between February 21, 2014, and July 17, 2015. These products were distributed to retail locations and distributors across eight states including Illinois, Colorado, and New Jersey. The recall was initiated because the meat may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 and non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.

Risk

The veal products may contain potentially deadly E. coli bacteria which can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. In severe cases, especially among children under 5 and older adults, infection can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious type of kidney failure.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your freezer for any Dutch Valley Veal or generically labeled combo bins of veal trimmings purchased between February 2014 and July 2015.
  2. Identify affected products by looking for establishment number 'EST. 167' inside the USDA mark of inspection and lot codes ranging from 4000 through 4313 or 5167 through 5365.
  3. Do not consume the recalled product; even if it appears or smells safe, it may contain harmful bacteria.
  4. If you have the product, contact Mike Jedlicka, company operations director, at (708) 849-7990 for specific instructions regarding the recall.
  5. If you suspect you have become ill after consuming these products, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
  6. For additional food safety questions, contact the USDA Meat & Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854.
