Summary

Approximately 8,400 Brompton folding bicycles are being recalled because a component called the bottom bracket can break during use. This recall affects bikes manufactured between April 2014 and May 2017 that were sold at specialty bicycle stores and Brompton dealers nationwide. If you have an affected bike, you should immediately stop riding it and take it to an authorized dealer to have a new bottom bracket cartridge installed for free.

Risk

The bicycle's bottom bracket can break suddenly while the bike is in motion, causing the rider to lose control and fall. Although no injuries have been reported yet, the failure of this critical structural component poses a significant danger to the rider.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the serial number printed on the curved plate or sticker located on the rear of the seat tube to see if it falls between 1403284144 and 1705150001.
  2. If the serial number sticker is faded or missing, locate the six-digit frame number stamped into the metal plate behind the bottom bracket and seat tube.
  3. Email the six-digit frame number to support@brompton.com to receive your bike's correlating serial number and confirm if it is part of the recall.
  4. Immediately stop using any bicycle identified as being part of the recall to prevent a potential fall.
  5. Contact an authorized Brompton dealer to schedule a free installation of a replacement bottom bracket cartridge. You can find more information online at www.brompton.com by clicking on 'Voluntary recall'.
  6. Call Brompton at 800-578-6785 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, for assistance or further questions.
  7. Contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional safety concerns or questions about this recall.
