PACCAR Incorporated: Kenworth and Peterbilt Trucks Recalled for Potential Brake Failure

Summary

PACCAR Incorporated is recalling approximately 8,008 vehicles, specifically 2021-2024 Kenworth (T280, T380, T480) and Peterbilt (536, 537, 548) models. A defect in the brake assembly can cause the pedal plunger to disconnect if the driver fully applies and then rapidly releases the brake pedal. This disconnection leads to a total failure of the service brakes. To resolve this issue, dealers will install a special pedal restraint bracket to ensure the plunger remains connected, free of charge.

Risk

If the brake pedal plunger disconnects, the driver will lose the ability to use the service brakes, which prevents the vehicle from stopping as intended and significantly increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2021-2024 Kenworth T280, T380, T480 or a 2021-2024 Peterbilt 536, 537, 548 truck.
  2. Contact Kenworth's customer service at 1-425-828-588 or Peterbilt's customer service at 1-940-591-4220 to confirm if your specific vehicle is affected.
  3. Schedule a service appointment with an authorized dealer to have a pedal restraint bracket installed for free.
  4. Reference PACCAR recall numbers 23KWB (for Kenworth vehicles) or 23PBB (for Peterbilt vehicles) when speaking with your dealer.
  5. For further assistance or to report safety concerns, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
