Navistar, Inc.: IC Bus CE School Buses Recalled for Brake Pressure Switch Fire Risk

Summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling approximately 15,398 IC Bus CE school buses from model years 2016 and 2018 through 2024. The recall was initiated because the brake pressure switch assembly can leak brake fluid into electrical components, causing a short-circuit. This electrical failure can lead to the circuit overheating and starting a fire while the bus is in operation or parked. Owners will receive a free replacement of the brake pressure switch and, if needed, a new wire harness or fuse.

Risk

The defect allows brake fluid to enter electrical areas, creating a short-circuit that can overheat and ignite. Because this can happen while the vehicle is parked, there is a risk of fire spreading to nearby buildings or structures.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage or near buildings due to the risk of fire.
  2. Identify if your bus is affected by checking if it is a 2016 or 2018-2024 IC Bus CE school bus.
  3. Contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 to schedule a free repair at a dealership (Reference recall number 23518).
  4. Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch assembly and, if necessary, the wire harness or fuse at no cost to you.
  5. For additional questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
