Daimler Trucks North America, LLC: Brake Lights May Fail to Illuminate

Summary

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 16,890 various Freightliner and Western Star trucks from the 2020-2025 model years. These vehicles may have a defect where the brake lights fail to illuminate when the truck automatically applies the brakes during an Active Brake Assist (ABA) safety event. To fix this, dealers will provide a free software update for the ABA system.

Risk

If the brake lights fail to turn on while the vehicle is automatically braking, other drivers behind the truck will not realize it is slowing down. This significantly increases the danger of a rear-end collision or other multi-vehicle crashes.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is one of the affected models: 2024-2025 Freightliner 108SD, 2022-2025 Freightliner 114SD, Freightliner Business Class M2, 2025 Freightliner eM2, 2020-2025 Western Star 49X, 2021-2025 Western Star 47X, or 2022-2025 Western Star 57X.
  2. Contact an authorized Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) dealer to schedule a free update for your Active Brake Assist (ABA) software.
  3. If you have additional questions, contact DTNA customer service at 800-745-8000 and reference recall number F1009.
  4. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
