Subaru of America, Inc.: 2023 Impreza Recalled for Brake Light and Transmission Interlock Malfunction

Summary

Subaru is recalling approximately 4,030 of its 2023 Impreza vehicles because the brake light switch may be improperly adjusted. This defect can cause the brake lights to stay on even when the driver is not pressing the brake pedal, and it may also allow the vehicle to be started or shifted out of 'Park' without the brake pedal being depressed. Owners should contact an authorized Subaru dealer to have the switch gap inspected and adjusted at no cost.

Risk

If the brake lights illuminate unintentionally, other drivers may not realize when you are actually braking, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision. Additionally, if the vehicle can be shifted out of 'Park' without pressing the brake, it could unexpectedly roll away and cause a crash or injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2023 Subaru Impreza by reviewing your registration or the VIN plate on the driver's side dashboard.
  2. Be aware that your vehicle may allow shifting out of the 'Park' position or starting the engine without the brake pedal being pressed; use extreme caution when parking and ensure the parking brake is engaged.
  3. Contact an authorized Subaru dealer to schedule a free inspection and adjustment of the brake light switch gap.
  4. If you have questions, contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614 and reference recall number WRI-23.
  5. For further assistance, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
