Summary

This recall involves about 1,550 Black Diamond Recon LT avalanche transceivers, including those sold individually and as part of Alpine and Recon LT Avy Safety Sets. These devices are gray plastic with a blue top, an LCD screen, and the Black Diamond logo on the front. They are being recalled because they can unexpectedly switch from transmit mode to search mode due to interference, preventing the device from broadcasting a person's location during an emergency. Black Diamond has received seven reports of this mode-switching issue, though no injuries have been reported. Consumers should immediately stop using the transceivers and contact Black Diamond for a free firmware update or a full refund.

Risk

If the transceiver unexpectedly enters search mode, it fails to transmit the user's location, which can delay rescue efforts for anyone buried in an avalanche. This loss of emergency communication can result in severe bodily harm or death.
