Summary

Black Diamond Equipment is recalling about 76,300 PIEPS and Black Diamond branded avalanche transceivers because the devices may fail to switch from SEND mode to SEARCH mode. Affected models include the PIEPS Pro BT, Powder BT, DSP series, and Micro BT series, as well as the Black Diamond Recon BT and Guide BT. Black Diamond has received 26 reports of the search mode failing to function properly, though no injuries have been reported. These transceivers were sold at specialty outdoor stores like REI and online at backcountry.com from January 2013 through April 2022.

Risk

If the transceiver fails to switch into SEARCH mode during an emergency, it will be unable to locate a skier buried in an avalanche. This defect poses a risk of severe bodily harm or death if a buried individual cannot be quickly found and rescued.
