Black Diamond Recon LT Avalanche Transceivers Recalled for Corrosion Risk

Summary

Black Diamond is recalling about 1,660 Recon LT avalanche transceivers because a metal contact in the switch mechanism can corrode and cause the device to malfunction or turn off unexpectedly. These gray plastic devices with blue tops were sold individually and as part of safety sets at REI and other outdoor stores between May 2021 and February 2025. There have been six reports of the switch mechanism failing due to corrosion, which can make it impossible to find a buried victim in an avalanche.

Risk

If the transceiver shuts off due to corrosion in the switch, it cannot transmit a signal or receive one to locate others. This failure during an avalanche emergency prevents the location of a buried victim, which could lead to serious injury or death.

What You Should Do

  1. This recall affects Black Diamond Recon LT avalanche transceivers with a gray exterior, blue top, and an LCD screen. The model name "RECON LT" and Black Diamond logo are printed on the front.
  2. The recalled transceivers were sold as individual units and within Black Diamond Alpine Avy Safety Sets or Recon LT Avy Safety Sets.
  3. Immediately stop using the recalled avalanche transceivers.
