Summary

Bed Handles Inc. has reannounced the recall of approximately 113,000 adult portable bed handles that were sold without safety retention straps. The recall includes the Original Bedside Assistant (BA10W), Travel Handles (BA11W), and the gold-colored Adjustable Bedside Assistant (AJ1). These products were sold at home health care stores, drug stores, and through medical catalogs nationwide between January 1994 and December 2007. Three deaths have been reported involving women who became trapped in a gap between the handle and the mattress. Consumers should stop using the handles immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit that includes safety straps and updated instructions.

Risk

Without safety retention straps, the bed handle can shift away from the mattress, creating a dangerous gap where a person can become trapped, leading to strangulation or death. Three fatalities have been linked to this entrapment hazard.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if you have a recalled bed handle by checking the white label for the manufacturer 'Bed Handles, Inc.' and model numbers BA10W (white), BA11W (white set of two), or AJ1 (gold with black foam).
  2. If your bed handle does not have safety retention straps securing it to the bed frame, stop using it immediately.
  3. Contact Bed Handles Inc. at 800-725-6903 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, to request a free repair kit.

  5. Once you receive the repair kit, follow the new instructions to securely attach the handle to the bed frame using the safety straps to prevent any gaps from forming.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this safety recall.
