Summary

Volvo Car USA is recalling approximately 27,457 vehicles from the 2023 model year, including the S60, V60, V60CC, V90CC, XC60, XC90, XC40, and C40. A software error in the Brake Control Module 2 (BCM2) can cause the vehicle to lose critical safety features like the Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and traction control. Volvo will provide a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to fix the issue, which does not require a trip to the dealership for most owners.

Risk

A loss of ABS and Electronic Stability Control reduces the driver's ability to maintain control of the vehicle during emergency braking or slippery conditions, which significantly increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your model and year: this recall includes 2023 Volvo S60, V60, V60CC, V90CC, XC60, XC90, XC40, and C40 models.
  2. Check your vehicle's infotainment system for a notification regarding an over-the-air (OTA) software update for the Brake Control Module 2 (BCM2).
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts in your vehicle to download and install the free software update once it is available.
  4. If you prefer or if your vehicle is not equipped for OTA updates, contact your local Volvo dealer to have the software update performed for free.
  5. Contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552 and reference recall number R10217 for more information.
  6. For additional questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
