Summary

Hendrickson USA is recalling 131 COMPOSILITE EXS20 and SC20 Lift Axles because the bearing journals may not be fully seated in the steering knuckle assemblies. This manufacturing defect can prevent the wheel end hub assemblies from being installed correctly, which may lead to lubricant leaks. If left unaddressed, the axle spindles can loosen or fracture, which significantly increases the risk of a crash. Hendrickson will work with affected manufacturers to inspect and replace the steering knuckle assemblies free of charge.

Risk

Incorrectly installed hub assemblies can leak lubricant, causing the axle spindles to loosen or break entirely while the vehicle is in motion, potentially leading to a loss of vehicle control or a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is equipped with Hendrickson COMPOSILITE EXS20 or SC20 Lift Axles.
  2. Check your records or contact your vehicle manufacturer to determine if your specific lift axle is part of the HAUX 2023-01 recall campaign.
  3. If your vehicle is affected, contact Hendrickson customer service at 1-630-773-9111 to coordinate a free inspection and replacement of the steering knuckle assemblies.
  4. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
