Summary

Winnebago Industries, Inc. is recalling approximately 6,540 of its 2019-2023 Travato motorhomes because the retractable awning can extend on its own while the vehicle is moving. This unexpected movement can create a dangerous road hazard or distract the driver, significantly increasing the risk of a crash. To fix this, dealers will install a dedicated on/off switch for the awning and update the system's firmware at no cost to owners.

Risk

The awning may deploy unexpectedly during transit, potentially striking other vehicles, pedestrians, or roadside objects, or causing the driver to lose control due to the sudden distraction and change in vehicle width.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your motorhome is affected by checking if it is a Winnebago Travato from model years 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023.
  2. Contact a Winnebago dealer to schedule a free repair, which includes the installation of a physical on/off switch for the awning and a firmware update.
  3. If you have questions, contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885 and reference recall number 22V696 (note: this recall is superseded by recall 23V627).
  4. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
