Altec Industries, Inc.: Digger Derricks Recalled for Detaching Auger Extension Bars

Summary

Altec Industries is recalling approximately 353 Digger Derricks from model years 2017 through 2022, including models DC, DB, DL, DM, DH, DT, and D2/3/4000. These vehicles were manufactured without the necessary hardware to secure the removable auger hex extension bar to the drive unit coupler. This defect can cause the extension bar to unexpectedly detach while the unit is being used. Altec will provide owners with inspection instructions and a free replacement hardware kit if any components are missing.

Risk

If the auger extension bar detaches while the digger drive unit is in operation, it can fall or be thrown from the machine, posing a serious risk of injury to nearby personnel and workers.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking the model and year: 2017-2022 Altec DC, DB, DL, DM, DH, DT, or D2/3/4000 Digger Derricks.
  2. Inspect the auger extension assembly following the specific instructions provided by Altec to determine if the hardware securing the hex extension bar to the drive unit coupler is present.
  3. If you find that the hardware is missing or if you have questions about the inspection, contact Altec customer service at 1-877-462-5832 and reference recall number CSN 3076.
  4. If hardware is missing, Altec will provide a replacement kit free of charge to resolve the safety issue.
  5. For additional information or to report safety concerns, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
