AQUALUNG is recalling approximately 330 Apeks Exotec SCUBA Diving Buoyancy Compensator Devices (BCDs). The dump valve knob on these devices can become stuck while the BCD is inflated, causing the valve to stay open and preventing the device from fully inflating. This can lead to a sudden loss of buoyancy control. The firm has received one report of a diver losing buoyancy control due to this defect, though no injuries have been reported. These BCDs feature gray or orange metal components and were sold at dive stores and online between August 2021 and June 2022. Affected consumers should stop using the device and return it for a free repair.
If the dump valve sticks open, the BCD will fail to hold air, preventing the diver from maintaining their position or controlling their ascent. This malfunction poses serious injury risks, such as decompression sickness, and drowning hazards.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled buoyancy compensator devices and take them back to the place where purchased for a free repair. If a consumer is unable to return the product to a dealer where purchased, they should reach out to AQUALUNG directly for instructions to receive a free repair.
The model number is printed on the label tucked behind the bladder between the tank attachment belt and the lower dump valve. Brand and model are embroidered on the back panel and side pockets.
