Summary

Applica Consumer Products is reannouncing the recall of approximately 641 Black & Decker Spacemaker 12-Cup Programmable Under-the-Cabinet Coffeemakers (model SDC 740) that were sold after an initial 2012 recall. The glass coffee pot handle can suddenly break, which can cause the pot to fall and shatter. This defect has resulted in over 1,607 reports of handles breaking, including 83 reports of burns or cuts to consumers. These units were sold in white or black at True Value Hardware Stores between July 2008 and June 2013 for between $50 and $80. Consumers should stop using the coffeemakers immediately and contact the manufacturer for a full refund.

Risk

The molded handle on the 12-cup glass carafe can break off during use, causing the pot to fall. This poses a serious risk of lacerations from broken glass and thermal burns from spilled hot coffee.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify your product by checking for 'BLACK and DECKER® SPACEMAKER™' printed in the top right-hand corner of the machine.
  2. Check the model number on the underside of the coffeemaker, directly below the water reservoir; model SDC 740 is affected by this recall.
  3. Verify the design: the recalled unit mounts under a cabinet, has a digital time display in the top left, and five round buttons above the water reservoir. The glass carafe should have a handle matching the machine's color and a silver metallic bracket around the bottom.
  4. Immediately stop using the coffeemaker to prevent the carafe handle from breaking and causing injury.
  5. Contact Applica Consumer Products toll-free at (866) 708-7846 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.acprecall.com to request a full refund.
  6. For additional information, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
