Apple Recalls Travel Adapter Kits and Plugs Due to Risk of Electric Shock

Summary

Apple is recalling approximately 814,000 World Travel Adapter Kits and wall plug adapters because the two-prong plugs can break and expose internal metal parts. These white plastic adapters were sold for use in Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Continental Europe, and Korea, and were also included with Mac computers and iOS devices. Apple has received 12 reports of these adapters breaking and causing electric shocks to consumers overseas, with three individuals requiring medical evaluation. Consumers should immediately stop using the affected adapters and contact Apple for a free replacement.

Risk

The plastic housing on the two-prong wall plug adapters can break during use, exposing live metal components. This creates a direct risk of electric shock if a consumer touches the exposed metal while the adapter is plugged into a power outlet.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your Apple wall plug adapters for specific physical characteristics: Australia/New Zealand/Argentina (flat angled blades), Brazil (round thin pins), Continental Europe (round thin pins, slightly slanted inward), or Korea (round thick pins).
  2. Look inside the slot where the wall plug adapter attaches to the main power brick to identify if it is affected: recalled adapters have either four or five letters or numbers, or no markings at all in that slot.
  3. Verify if your adapter is a redesigned (safe) version by looking for a three-letter regional code in the slot, such as EUR, ARG, KOR, AUS, or BRA.
  4. Immediately stop using any identified recalled wall plug adapters.
  5. Contact Apple to receive a free replacement adapter by calling 800-275-2273 at any time, or by visiting www.apple.com and clicking on the 'AC Wall Plug Adapter Recall Program' link.
  6. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
