Apple Recalls Three-Prong Wall Plug Adapters Included in World Travel Adapter Kit Due to Risk of Electric Shock

Summary

Apple is recalling approximately 814,000 three-prong AC wall plug adapters included in the World Travel Adapter Kit and sold with Mac computers and iOS devices before February 2015. These adapters can break during use, exposing internal metal components and potentially delivering an electric shock. Globally, there have been six reports of these adapters breaking and causing shocks to consumers, including two individuals who required medical evaluation. Apple is providing free replacement adapters to all affected customers.

Risk

The plastic housing of the three-prong adapter can crack or break, leaving the metal parts of the plug exposed while it is still connected to a power outlet. This creates a direct risk of electric shock if a user touches the exposed metal portion while attempting to unplug or handle the device.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your adapter to see if it is affected: The recalled three-prong adapters are all-white with no letters printed on the inside slot where it attaches to the main power brick. Redesigned safe adapters are white with a gray internal plastic piece and include a three-letter regional code (like 'GBR') in that same slot.
  2. Immediately stop using any recalled adapters that do not have the gray internal plastic and letter codes.
  3. Visit the Apple support website at www.apple.com, click on 'Support,' and select the 'Apple Three-Prong AC Wall Plug Adapter Recall Program' at the bottom of the page to start the replacement process.
  4. You can also contact Apple directly at 800-275-2273 at any time to request your free replacement adapter.
  5. Contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional safety questions regarding this recall.
