Summary

This recall involves approximately 340,000 Honda EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion, and EU2200i Camo portable generators. The inverter assembly in these units can short-circuit if it comes into contact with salt water, leading to smoke or fire. Honda has received 13 reports of the inverter assembly short-circuiting while in use, including 10 reports of actual fires, though no injuries or property damage have been reported. These generators were sold nationwide at authorized Honda dealers, Home Depot, and other home improvement stores between February 2018 and January 2020. Consumers should stop using the recalled units immediately and contact an authorized Honda Power Equipment dealer for a free repair.

Risk

The generator's internal inverter can short-circuit when exposed to salt water, causing the unit to smoke or catch fire. This defect poses a significant fire and burn hazard to anyone near the operating unit.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled generator and do not attempt to operate it.
  2. Check your generator's control panel for the model name (EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion, or EU2200i Camo) and locate the serial number on the lower corner of a side panel.
  3. Verify if your serial number falls within the affected ranges: EB2200i (EAJT-1000001 thru 1011342) or EU2200i models (EAMT-1000001 thru 2098790).
  4. Contact a local authorized Honda Power Equipment service dealer to schedule a free repair. You can find a dealer or get more information by calling American Honda toll-free at 888-888-3139 (8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET, Monday–Friday) or visiting https://powerequipment.honda.com/.
  5. Even if you participated in a previous recall for these same generator models in 2019, you must participate in this new recall for this specific salt water short-circuit issue.
  6. Contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional safety questions.
