Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 8 specific 2024 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, and X7 xDrive40i vehicles because the instrument panel may have been manufactured incorrectly. This defect can cause the instrument panel to separate or prevent the air bag from deploying properly during a crash. To fix this safety issue, BMW dealers will replace the entire instrument panel at no cost to the owner.

Risk

If the instrument panel separates during air bag deployment, pieces of the panel can strike and injure occupants. Additionally, an improperly deploying air bag may fail to restrain passengers as intended, significantly increasing the risk of injury during a collision.

What You Should Do

  1. Verify if your vehicle is one of the 8 affected units by checking your VIN on the NHTSA website or by contacting a BMW dealership. Affected models include the 2024 BMW X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, and X7 xDrive40i.
  2. Contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule a free appointment for an instrument panel replacement.
  3. If you have already received a notification letter (mailed around April 16, 2024), follow the instructions provided to visit your local dealer for the repair.
