BMW of North America, LLC: 2023 2 Series Coupe Recalled for Side Air Bag Cover Defects

Summary

BMW is recalling 804 of its 2023 2 Series Coupe vehicles, specifically the 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, and M240i xDrive models. The plastic cover panels for the second-row seat side air bags may break apart when the air bags deploy. This defect can prevent the air bags from inflating correctly and may send broken plastic fragments into the cabin, increasing the risk of injury to passengers in the back seat. BMW dealers will replace these cover panels with updated versions free of charge.

Risk

If the side air bags are triggered during a crash, the backrest cover panels can shatter, causing the air bags to deploy improperly and potentially striking occupants with plastic debris.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking for these specific models: 2023 BMW 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, and M240i xDrive Coupes.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the rear seat backrest side air bag cover panels replaced.
  3. If you have further questions or need help finding a dealer, call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  4. For additional information, you can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
