Adult Portable Bed Handles Recalled by Bed Handles Inc. Due to Entrapment and Strangulation Hazards; Three Deaths Reported

Summary

Bed Handles Inc. is recalling approximately 113,000 adult portable bed handles because they were sold without safety retention straps. Without these straps, the handle can shift and create a dangerous gap between the handle and the mattress, which has led to three reported deaths from entrapment and strangulation. The recall includes the Original Bedside Assistant (BA10W), Travel Handles (BA11W), and the gold-colored Adjustable Bedside Assistant (AJ1) sold between 1994 and 2007. Consumers should stop using these handles immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit.

Risk

The bed handle can shift out of position, creating a space between the mattress and the rail where an adult can become trapped. This poses a severe risk of strangulation and death, with three fatal entrapment incidents involving women already reported.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately identify if you have any of the affected models: the Original Bedside Assistant (BA10W), the Travel Handles (BA11W), or the Adjustable Bedside Assistant (AJ1). Look for the Bed Handles Inc. name and model number on a white label on the product.
  2. Check if your bed handle is secured to the bed frame using safety retention straps; if it was purchased between January 1994 and December 2007, it likely does not have these essential safety components.
  3. Immediately stop using any recalled bed handle that lacks safety retention straps.
  4. Contact Bed Handles Inc. at (800) 725-6903 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit http://bedhandles.com/recall.html to request a free repair kit. The kit includes safety retention straps, a warning label, and updated assembly and installation instructions.
  5. Do not resume use of the bed handle until you have installed the new safety retention straps to securely attach the handle to the bed frame according to the new instructions.
  6. For additional questions, call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
