Volvo Trucks North America: 2020-2023 VNR Electric Trucks Recalled for Sudden Aggressive Braking

Summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling 236 of its 2020-2023 VNR Electric vehicles equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). When the cruise control braking system activates while the truck has a light load, it can trigger an unexpectedly aggressive braking response. To fix this, dealers will disable the adaptive cruise control system by removing hardware and reprogramming the vehicle's braking software.

Risk

The overly aggressive braking can cause the rear axle to skid or the brakes to lock up. This can lead to a sudden loss of vehicle control, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking if it is a 2020-2023 Volvo VNR Electric truck equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
  2. Contact Volvo Trucks' customer service at 1-800-528-6586 to confirm if your specific vehicle is included in recall number RVXX2303.
  3. Schedule a service appointment with an authorized dealer to have the radar antennas and brackets removed, wiring secured, and the anti-lock braking system (ABS) reprogrammed to disable the adaptive cruise control.
  4. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
