Hyundai Motor America: Various Hyundai Vehicles Recalled for ABS Module Fire Risk

Summary

Approximately 1,649,478 Hyundai vehicles are being recalled because the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module can leak brake fluid internally. This defect can cause an electrical short, leading to an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is either parked or being driven. Affected models include certain years of the Elantra, Sonata Hybrid, Accent, Tucson, Santa Fe, and several others manufactured between 2010 and 2015. Hyundai dealers will replace the ABS fuse free of charge to prevent this electrical failure.

Risk

Brake fluid leaking into the ABS module can create an electrical short circuit. This poses a significant fire hazard in the engine compartment, which can occur at any time, even when the vehicle is turned off and parked. Parking near structures while the defect is present increases the risk of property damage and personal injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage due to fire risk.
  2. Check if your vehicle is among the affected models: 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, or Sonata Hybrid; 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, or Veloster; 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe or Santa Fe; 2014-2015 Equus; 2010-2012 Veracruz; 2010-2013 Tucson; 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell; or 2013 Santa Fe Sport.
  3. Contact a local Hyundai dealer to schedule a free replacement of the ABS fuse.
  4. If you have additional questions, contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and mention recall number 251.
  5. Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov for further information.
