Summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling approximately 19,376 school buses, including 2021-2024 IC Bus RE, 2022-2024 IC Bus CE, and IC Bus EV models. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) indicator light on these vehicles may fail to stay lit when a malfunction occurs while the bus is in motion. This defect means the vehicles do not comply with federal safety standards for air brake systems. Navistar dealers will provide a free software update to correct the issue, and owner notification letters are scheduled to be sent by July 24, 2023.

Risk

If the ABS indicator light does not stay illuminated during a system failure, the driver will not be alerted to the malfunction. Operating a vehicle without a functioning anti-lock brake system increases the risk of a crash, particularly in emergency braking situations.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle records to determine if you own a 2021-2024 IC Bus RE, 2022-2024 IC Bus CE, or an IC Bus EV school bus.
  2. Contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 to confirm if your specific vehicle is included in recall number 23516.
  3. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Navistar dealer to receive a free software update that will ensure the ABS indicator light functions correctly.
  4. Monitor the vehicle's dashboard for any brake-related warnings and exercise caution while driving until the software update has been performed.
  5. For additional questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
