New Flyer Transit Buses Recalled for ABS and ESC Warning Light Failure

Summary

New Flyer of America, Inc. is recalling approximately 6,673 transit buses because the antilock braking (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) systems may fail without warning. The recall affects 16 different models, including the XD35, XDE40, and XE60 series. The specific defect causes these safety systems to lose communication and stop working without illuminating the dashboard warning lights to alert the driver. New Flyer will provide a free software update to correct the communication issue.

Risk

If the ABS or ESC warning lights fail to turn on, a driver will be unaware that these safety systems are inactive. Operating a heavy transit bus without functioning stability control or antilock brakes significantly increases the risk of a crash, especially during emergency braking or difficult road conditions.
