Summary

Approximately 616,000 Ultra-Low NOx gas water heaters are being recalled because the gas burner screen can tear and create excess radiant heat. This poses a serious fire hazard, especially if the unit is installed directly on wood or other combustible flooring. There have been six reports of fires related to this issue, though no injuries have been reported. The water heaters were sold under various brand names including A. O. Smith, American, Kenmore, Reliance, State, U.S. Craftsmaster, and Whirlpool between April 2011 and December 2016. Consumers should immediately stop using these water heaters and contact the manufacturer for a free repair.

Risk

The burner screen can develop tears, causing the burner to generate excessive radiant heat that can ignite combustible flooring underneath the unit.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the data plate located next to the gas control valve/thermostat on your 30, 40, or 50-gallon water heater to identify the brand, model number, and serial number.
  2. Verify if your serial number is affected: Only units with the first four digits between 1115 and 1631 are included (representing production from the 15th week of 2011 through the 31st week of 2016).
  3. Visit www.waterheaterrecall.com to input your model and serial number to confirm if your specific unit is subject to the recall.
  4. Immediately turn off and stop using the water heater if it is confirmed to be part of the recall.
  5. If you own a Whirlpool, U.S. Craftmaster, or American Water Heater brand, call 866-854-2793 (8 a.m.–10 p.m. ET Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. ET Sat-Sun) to determine if a free repair is necessary.
