Summary

3M is recalling approximately 7,500 vented hard hats sold under the 3M, 3M Tekk Protection, and AOSafety brands because they were marketed as providing protection against electric shock when they do not. The white hard hats feature eight ventilation slits on each side of the crown and were sold exclusively online at Alliedelec.com, Amazon.com, and HomeDepot.com between January 2008 and April 2016. Consumers who purchased these for electrical protection should stop using them and contact 3M for a free replacement.

Risk

The hard hats contain ventilation slits that allow electricity to pass through, posing a serious risk of electric shock to users who rely on them for electrical safety. While no injuries have been reported, the product fails to provide the advertised electrical insulation.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your hard hat for identifying marks: look for '3M' or 'AOSafety' molded into the top of the brim and 'XLR8 VENTED' molded onto the bottom of the brim.
  2. Verify the internal markings by checking for 'ANSI Z89.1' printed on a sticker inside the hard hat and confirming it has eight 3/4-inch long ventilation slits on each side of the crown.
  3. If you purchased this hard hat online for protection against electrical shock, stop using it immediately for that purpose.
  4. Contact 3M Company at 800-494-3552 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday to receive a free replacement hard hat.
  5. Visit www.3MSafety.com or www.DIY.3M.com and click on 'Safety Recall' for additional information and instructions on the replacement process.
  6. For further questions regarding this recall, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
