Summary

Volkswagen is recalling approximately 1,042 of its 2023 ID4 rear-wheel drive vehicles because a 12-Volt battery charging cable may rub against the steering column shaft. This contact can wear down the cable's insulation, potentially leading to a short circuit. If a short circuit occurs, the vehicle may lose drive power while in motion or experience a fire.

Risk

A short circuit in the high-voltage environment increases the risk of a vehicle fire even while parked. Owners are advised to park outdoors and away from structures to prevent potential fire spread to buildings.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors and away from structures immediately — do NOT park in a garage or near your home due to the risk of a vehicle fire.
  2. Verify if your vehicle is affected by checking your VIN on the NHTSA website or contacting a Volkswagen dealer to see if your 2023 ID4 rear-wheel drive model is included in recall 97HA.
  3. Contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 to schedule a free inspection and repair.
  4. Arrange for an authorized Volkswagen dealer to inspect the 12-Volt battery charging cable and repair or replace it as necessary at no cost to you.
  5. For further information or questions, call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
